True to its name, “Seva Trust” stands for Selfless Service. Starting from humble origins with small contributions way back in 1984 Nirmala decided to start an indigenous trust, working for the underprivileged with their own orphanages based at Goa in India.
The word, “Seva” originates from the ancient Indian language called Sanskrit and it means, “Selfless Service”. Seva is plainly defined as Selfless Service and it refers to service which is performed without any expectation of self benefit, result or award for the person performing it. The word Seva is also sometimes used to denote a service performed with no apparent 'earthly' result, but which may accrue results in a spiritual or heavenly realm after death.
Seva Trust located in Goa, believes in SELF LESS action. Nirmala explains this saying that the self is to be made of less importance and without any selfishness we have to dedicate our time and resources to the upliftment of women, children and the elderly in Goa, India.
The inspiration of selfless service or Seva provides the moral backbone of the majority of world religions such as Christianity , Hinduism , and Buddhism. In the eastern Dharmic Religions specific attention to service or Seva is given within Sikhism and bhakti yoga . The concept of Seva is similar to the Christian ideal of Charity as a form of love or devotion for one's fellow man and God. Nirmala further explains that because God is perceived as residing in the heart of others, serving other people and in particular helping them to find God by way of a spiritual teacher or selfless service is considered an essential devotional practice.
